How the notability check works

The assessment first establishes who or what the subject of the page is: you choose a category and, within it, the profile that describes your situation. The questions that follow are the ones that apply to that profile. An academic is measured against different criteria than an executive; an organisation is tested more strictly than a person. Each question set is grounded in the guideline the English Wikipedia applies to that profile — from the general notability guideline to the subject-specific guidelines for academics, musicians, creative professionals and athletes.

The outcome has three levels, from strong indicators to a situation that requires careful assessment. With every outcome you read which criterion decides your case and what would strengthen it — no score without explanation.

The assessment uses no cookies and stores nothing. Your details are only collected when you yourself request a confidential review at the end.

What the English Wikipedia weighs

Wikipedia does not assess who you are, but what independent sources have recorded about you. A fixed hierarchy applies — and the English Wikipedia tests for editorial independence more strictly than most other language editions.

Counts: articles written by the editorial staff of independent national or international outlets, about you; books and reference works; academic literature — for academics, citation impact; independent reviews of your work.

Limited weight: regional media and trade press; brief mentions; a single article.

Does not count: interviews, press releases and contributed pieces; your own website and social media; sponsored content; contributor posts on platforms such as Forbes; database entries and listings that accept self-nomination.

Two principles return in almost every assessment. Notability is not inherited: the standing of your company, restaurant or family does not automatically transfer to you as a person. And coverage must be sustained: a single peak around a single event does not carry a page. The full Wikipedia notability requirements per profession are explained in our guide.

What the outcome means

The outcome is an indication, not a verdict. The assessment measures what you yourself are aware of; notability on Wikipedia is established by third-party sources, and those often reach further than one's own field of view. Digitised news archives, foreign media, academic literature and reference works regularly surface material in source research that the person concerned did not know existed — in both directions.

That is why every outcome ends in the same step: a confidential review, on request. We research the sources and you receive a substantiated opinion by email on whether a page would hold up. Even when the conclusion is that a page would not hold up at present, you know where you stand and what it would take. Discreet, carefully documented.

Frequently asked questions about the notability check

What is the Wikipedia notability check?

An assessment of 21 profiles that tests whether a Wikipedia page is feasible. The questions follow, per profile, the guidelines of the English Wikipedia — from the general notability guideline to the subject-specific guidelines for academics, musicians and athletes. The outcome shows your level, the criterion that decides your case and what would strengthen it.

How reliable is the outcome?

The check measures what you yourself are aware of and gives an indication, not a verdict. Notability is established by independent sources, which often reach further than one's own field of view. A definitive answer follows from source research during a confidential review.

Are my answers stored?

No. The check uses no cookies and stores nothing. Your details are only collected when you yourself request a confidential review at the end, and are then used solely to handle that request.

What happens after the check?

You decide. If you want certainty, you request a confidential review at the end. We research the sources and you receive a substantiated opinion by email on whether a page would hold up — including when the conclusion is that it would not at present.

Can I run the check for a company or organisation?

Yes. The Business & governance category contains a separate profile for organisations and companies. The English Wikipedia applies its strictest sourcing test to organisations: each source must by itself be significant, independent, reliable and secondary, and press releases and product news do not count.

What if a page was deleted before?

Then the reason for deletion determines what a new attempt would require. The check flags this situation and takes it into the outcome. A second deletion weighs heavier than the first; research beforehand is then a precondition, not a luxury.
